Membership at St Columba

When people think of membership they often think of benefits, like “what do I get for my membership?”

Membership in a church is very different.

Membership begins with God as an act of unconditional love and grace. You can’t buy it or take out a sub. The “fees” have been paid in full as you accept God’s love as a gift.

“I have received the free gift of God’s unconditional love in Jesus Christ.”

Jesus was always up front with people. When he invited them to “come follow me” he also outlined very clearly the cost. Grace may be free but it is never cheap.  Salvation costs nothing but discipleship costs everything.  Luke 14:25-35

“I am a follower and learner of the Jesus way and willingly pay the cost of being a disciple.”

Membership is a life of servant hood (not consumerism).  Ask not “what I can get?” but “what can I give?” Philippians 2:5-11

“I am a servant”

  • Hospitality and welcome
  • Loving and forgiving others
  • Generosity of spirit and finances

Membership in a local church is about joining together with others who have received this gift and working together as partners in God’s mission to the world.

At St Columba we encourage you be become a member. This is a tangible expression of your love and service of God. By becoming a member of St Columba you are saying that this is the place where you want to belong, serve and grow as a follower of Jesus.

The Bible is very clear that God’s mission is to the world, not in the church. The church exists to equip people for works of service in the world. Matthew 5:13-16

Our mission is God’s commission…

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, 'Love your neighbour as yourself.” Luke 10:27

“I am committed to St Columba and will contribute regularly of my time and resources to God mission in the world.”

How to become a member at St Columba?

Can you say “yes” to each of the statements above? If so please phone Chris, or the church office and we will make personal contact with you. From there we will offer a service of affirmation of faith and commission you for service.
