To the worried - you've got mail!
Dear friend,
I'm sorry you got trapped in a guilt trip with that saying: "Don't worry, be happy." It's not even a "counsel of perfection" as you call. It's a counsel of imperfection! There's no magical button that will suddenly turn worry into happiness. So forget it.
And while I'm at it, I did not create you to be a worrier - so no more of this "I'm a born worrier" It's a lie. I made you to enjoy life in all its wholesomeness.1
Now here's the programme I have devised to help you restore your peace of mind when you are assailed by worry.
First, find a place that's quiet, where you can relax and let all the tensions drain out of you body and mind.2
Second, ask me this question: "Lord, show me exactly what is happening here? The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth." This is the most important thing I have to say to you. Take your time. Write down what comes into you head. Sift out the truth from speculation.
Third, do what ever you can that is reasonable and sensible to deal with the problem. If you are not sure, ask me. Then wait.
Finally, when you have done what you can, hand the whole matter back to me. Give me permission to complete the task in my way and time. And you will learn the excitement of trusting!3
And remember, whether you succeed or fail at this, my love for you never gets tired.
Your burden bearer,
Jesus
